What Will Become of the US Postal Service?

Do you remember back in the day when you anxiously waited for the mailman to come with a letter, a card, or a package from a loved one? Well, with extreme government budget cuts and the recent tech boom, the state of the US Postal Service is hanging in limbo.

USPS is already $15 Billion in debt. They've closed several locations across the country and in just 4 years the volume of mail coming through USPS has gone down 20%. The agency is also struggling to pay for the health benefits of its employees and has probably overpaid the pension plans for current retirees.

Anybody that knows someone that worked for USPS knows that they used to have a great retirement plan! It looks like that might not be the case anymore...

With this decline USPS is desperate to stay competitive, but some of its leaders' recent proposals could lead to major changes. The changes may include more layoffs and more post office closings. This could also mean the end of Saturday mail deliveries.

At this rate if they continue closing offices there will be none left! What good is it to keep USPS alive when there are hardly any left and nobody works at the office? It seems almost inefficient to keep the offices open if there will be a lack of employees.

So where will they go from here? USPS will continue developing its partnerships with groups like FedEx and UPS to enhance the efficiency of their delivery/collection system. They will also continue closing locations in the more rural areas.

This reinvention plan doesn't sound great! USPS has already laid off a ton of people. Nowadays it takes forever to get service in their office and it will be even worse with the additional layoffs that they're proposing. Should the government just end USPS for good???
