Great News!!! Kanye & Common Team Up To Bring 20,000 Jobs To Chicago!

They put on for their city! Rappers and Chicago natives, Kanye West and Common have joined forces to bring over 20,000 jobs to their hometown.
Common recently announced during a press conference that his Common Ground Foundation will be working with Kanye West’s Donda’s House, Inc. and the Chicago Urban League in an initiative to bring employment opportunities through The Chicago Youth Jobs Collaborative. 92 percent of the Black youth in Chicago is unemployed, which means that many of these kids are on the streets. And we’ve all read the gruesome headlines about Chicago’s cruel streets. But what’s worse is Chicago has become the center of the national gun debate, and the city’s youth has taken the hardest hit from gun violence.
In the first eight weeks of 2013, there were 52 homicides, with 15 victims between the ages of 13 and 19, according to a RedEye analysis of preliminary crime data.
Common told Poppin Lines, “Obviously, one of the biggest reasons our kids are going through what they’re going through is because of poverty. I was doing an event in the neighborhood and there were some kids from Englewood and I said, ‘Man, what do y’all really need? What’s gonna stop this?’ And they were like, ‘We need money. Man, if we could work.’ They want a chance.”
And it’s a beautiful thing that Common and Kanye will be giving them this chance. Not only will this initiative bring long-term jobs to the youth of Chicago, but it will also bring a music festival that will act as a yearly fundraiser to raise money for the jobs and other programs. It will be held on September 20-21 behind the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park.
“It’s one thing to provide summer jobs for these kids, but we’re trying to provide year-round jobs,” saidAndrea Zopp, CEO of the Chicago Urban League. “We’ve had hearings and the kids have told us that they need jobs year-round.”
Isn’t it wonderful to see stars like Kanye and Common raising awareness to current social issues, like education and poverty?

SAD NEWS: Creator of ‘For Brown Girls’ & #DarkSkinRedLipProject Dies From Apparent Suicide

We are shocked and saddened to report that Karyn Washington, 22, the beautiful creator of the uplifting website, ForBrownGirls.com has died, due to an apparent suicide. Karyen created the site as an “inspiration destination” where Black women with darker skin could go and feel beautiful. She also sparked the hashtag#DarkSkinRedLipProject after A$AP Rocky boldly stated that dark-skin women shouldn’t wear red lipstick. This was a place where thousands of dark skin women posted stunning photos of themselves in red lipstick to dispel that wicked myth.
It’s being reported that Karyn struggled with mental illness and depression and despite giving all the love in her heart to others, she wasn’t able to give that same love to herself.  We as a community need to embrace the fact that mental illness is real.  Prayer is great, but we need medical attention.  This unfortuately happens far too often.
Please continue to pray for all young men and women dealing with mental illness and also lift up this young lady's family and friends during this tough time.

President Obama Signs Order to Enforce Equal Pay for Women

In the last seven decades the gap between women and men's income has not changed much; women only earn 77 cents to every dollar that a man makes.

In an effort to bridge the gap and ensure equal pay for equal work, President Barack Obama signed a pair of executive orders. One order ensured women's rights to equal pay, the other stops federal contractors from  retaliating against employees that request to discuss their pay with supervisors.

This is the newest action that the president has taken to enforce worker's rights, but not the first. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (2009) is another law that was passed in an effort achieve fairness in the workplace. All of these fall under the Fair Paycheck Act which will be under review with these new orders.

President Obama signing the executive actions on April 8, 2014.

Click Here to learn more about the Economic Agenda for Equal Opportunity.

Through both of his terms President Obama has consistently maintained that economic equality was his major platform and he would do everything in his power to see it through. As a society we still have a long way to go, but I can safely that this is the most that one man has ever done to improve the struggle of minorities in America.

Have you noticed a difference in the income between women and men? Do you think Obama is doing enough to keep his promise for Economic Equality?

“Single Ladies” has come as part of a package deal! According to the LA Times, Flavor Unit will also create other original shows for Centric and the network will air reruns of “The Queen Latifah Show” in prime time.

NEWS: Finally!!! A Smartphone with Airtight Security

Since the invention of Smartphones, one of the biggest complaints has been the lack of privacy that its users are given. Anyone can hack into our phones at any time! Systems like GPS and Wi-Fi make it possible to track our whereabouts, and to top it off, when we try to erase data from our phone it's still floating around in cyberspace!

Mike Janke has invented the Blackphone, the consumer's answer to Smartphones that lack security. This android-software phone has military level security, the highest level available. There are no tracking devices on this phone, which means that nobody from the government or the phone company can track you down. User data is stored in a secure vault in Switzerland so that once it's erased from your phone it is gone for good.

So now we start to ask, what kind of data should the government get for the sake of protecting the public?

The Black phone will sell for $629 beginning this summer.

Do you think the Black phone is something you would consider buying? Should the information on our cell phones be available for public record?

NEWS: President Obama Unveils "My Brother's Keeper" Initiative

President Barack Obama has just launched "My Brother's Keeper", an Initiative created to support and encourage the success of young men of color in the United States.

After the murder of Trayvon Martin 2 years ago, President Obama committed himself to creating a community task force that would minimize the violence and risky behavior for young men who live in urban communities. As we all know, these environments can be unforgiving towards young men of color and they experience an inordinate amount of harassment.

Watch the speech below:

"My Brother's Keeper" will be led by Broderick Johnson, the Assistant Secretary to the President. The task force will also include the Education Secretary, the Attorney General, and the Labor Secretary of the United States.

The President warned that although this initiative will require community support, it will not operate as a replacement for parenting.

What do you think of this Initiative? This is definitely a step in the right direction but we need more information about what that will look like in terms of community involvement and the protection of our young men!

NFL May Ban N-Word On Field, Do You Agree?

NFL team owners may endorse a new rule next month that will penalize players for using the N-word on the field.
Coaches and players have been fined in the past for swearing at fans, but not each other. Taunting penalties have been handed down but language is not usually parsed out as the reason for the flag.
The decision is raising concern from players in the league because the NFL is comprised of almost 70% African-American players who will be the primary recipients of the fine.
“I think it’s going to be really tough to legislate this rule, to find a way to penalize everyone who uses this word,” Ryan Clark, a Pittsburgh Steelers safety who’s spent 12 years in the league, told ESPN’s Bob Ley during an “Outside The Lines” special report. “And it’s not going to be white players using it toward black players. Most of the time you hear it, it’s black players using the word.”

The decision comes from the drama in the Miami Dolphins locker room between lineman Jonathan Martin and teammate Richard Incognito, who is white, and called him the N-Word on several occasions.
The proposed penalty for using the N-Word is 15 yards, which is pretty steep. Right now other penalties that incur 15-yard penalties include:
  1. Chop block.
  2. Clipping below the waist.
  3. Fair catch interference.
  4. Illegal crackback block by offense.
  5. Piling on.
  6. Roughing the kicker.
  7. Roughing the passer.
  8. Twisting, turning, or pulling an opponent by the facemask.
  9. Unnecessary roughness.
  10. Unsportsmanlike conduct
Do you think the NFL should ban the word?

GUILTY: Ex New Orleans Mayor Faces 20 Years In Prison For Taking Bribes

A jury has just returned guilty verdicts on 20 of the 21 counts of corruption and bribery that Ray Nagin faced in a nine-day trial.
Barring a favorable appeal, Nagin, 57, could be sentenced to as much as two decades in a federal penitentiary. Prosecutors used 26 witnesses and reams of documents to detail how Nagin accepted more than $500,000 in payouts, including first-class trips to Jamaica and Manhattan, in exchange for millions of dollars in city contracts.
Nagin’s spectacular plunge from upstart politician and post-storm persona to convicted felon is more than just another case study in public service gone awry. American history – Louisiana’s in particular – is littered with similar cases of politicians on the take.
What makes Nagin’s case unique is that it occurred amid one of the worst catastrophes to hit a U.S. city. The floods unleashed by faulty federal levees in the wake of Hurricane Katrina on Aug. 29, 2005, led to the deaths of 1,800 people across the Gulf Coast, caused a record-breaking $135 billion in damage and devastated New Orleans.

Former New Orleans mayor C. Ray Nagin who became the face of a desperate, drowning city during Hurricane Katrina was convicted today on charges of accepting bribes from city contractors while in office.
Nagin, a Democrat, was found guilty by a federal jury on 20 of 21 criminal counts, including bribery, conspiracy and wire fraud. He was acquitted on one count of bribery.

Prosecutors said that Nagin accepted illegal gifts from contractors, beginning before Katrina hit and continuing afterward. Among the gifts: money, free vacation travel and truckloads of granite for Stone Age LLC, a business Nagin and his sons owned.
Nagin had moved to Frisco, Tex., after leaving office as mayor. He has been ordered to remain on home confinement, subject to electronic monitoring, while he awaits sentencing. Several of the 20 charges carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Those convictions ended a remarkable fall for Nagin, a former cable TV executive who denounced New Orleans’s culture of corruption when he ran for mayor in 2002.
Nagin was mayor when the storm hit in August 2005 and served as a kind of human metaphor for the city’s collapse. The country watched the mayor break down, just as his city did.
“They don’t have a clue what’s going on down here,” Nagin told a radio interviewer several days after the storm, expressing outrage that federal authorities had not sent enough help. “I need reinforcements, I need troops, man. I need 500 buses, man. . . . This is a national disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans.”

But through it all, prosecutors said, Nagin seemed to be absorbing the corrupt ethos he had promised to fight. This year in a New Orleans courtroom, they described how Nagin had taken a variety of things from contractors seeking business with the city.

In court, Nagin denied taking bribes and said instead that he had only approved contracts from low-bidding vendors, or contracts selected by a committee of others. Nagin denied the contracts were tied to the benefits given to either himself or his family business, the Associated Press reported.
Nagin left office in 2010, replaced by Mitch Landrieu (D), the brother of U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.). Mitch Landrieu was reelected this year to another term.

A jury has just returned guilty verdicts on 20 of the 21 counts of corruption and bribery that Ray Nagin faced in a nine-day trial.

Magic Johnson to Own Part of WNBA Franchise The LA Sparks

Magic Johnson and Los Angeles Dodgers chairman Mark Walter have partnered to buy the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA, saving the struggling franchise from relocation or contraction, WNBA president Laurel Richie has confirmed.

The new Sparks ownership group also includes Dodgers president Stan Kasten and part owners Todd Boehly and Bobby Patton, according to sources.

"Their knowledge of L.A., their passion for sports in L.A., it's just a great thing," WNBA president Laurel Richie told ESPN.com's Mechelle Voepel. "I could say it a million times: We are truly, truly excited."

A news conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The Sparks, one of the original eight WNBA franchises, have been in limbo since Christmas when their previous owner, Paula Madison, abruptly told the league and Sparks coaches and employees that her company could no longer operate the team. Madison subsequently told The Associated Press that her family lost $12 million operating the franchise since buying it from the Buss family in 2007 and $1.4 million last season.

What You Need to Know About the XBox One

Earlier this week Microsoft revealed the details about XBox One, the newest operating system from the XBox line. This console will replace the XBox 360 which has not been updated for about eight years.

Here are the most notable updates: 8 GB of RAM, 500 GB on the hard drive,  multiple apps at once, split screens, and voice recognition.

All of that to say you can make vocal commands on your XBox One and will be able to use Skype while you watch TV/DVR. This upgrade will also lead to several other program improvements, such as new programming options with NFL games and EA Sports (NBA Life, Fifa, etc). XBox Kinect has also developed a 1080 angle camera that can monitor your heart rate during workouts.

Watch the reveal video to learn more about its capabilities:

Visually, the XBox One does not appear much sleeker than its predecessor. It actually may be bulkier in appearance. However, the console itself is doubled in power so if you don't mind having an OS that looks like a VCR (remember those?) then you're good to go.

The biggest drawback: XBox One will not be backwards compatible, meaning that all of your materials from older generations will not work on this one! This would be an expensive upgrade for all the techies out there.

A release date has not yet been set and Microsoft has not shared a potential price range either.

Hmm...this product sounds good but there could be some major issues with all of the new bells and whistles. Too much all at once?

WTH: I-5 Bridge in Washington Collapses, People Fall with It

Aerial view of bridge after collapse

This is the craziest news to come out of Washington state in a long time!

Yesterday in Mount Vernon an oversized truck smashed into the top part of I-5 bridge and caused the bridge to instantly collapse. All of the drivers at the time also fell in. Surprisingly, only 3 people were taken to the hospital but none of the injuries were fatal.

The Department of Transportation is currently investigating who is to blame for this major collapse: the truck driver who proceeded over the bridge when he knew it wouldn't fit, or the company that sent the driver on that route.

Originally built in 1957, this bridge had recently been labeled as "Functionally Obsolete" meaning that before its collapse, it was no longer able to handle the traffic flow that had developed in recent years. Out of 100, the bridge only had a safety rating of 47. Yikes! It is estimated that repairs will cost millions of dollars.

Hopefully this kind of car damage is covered in everyone's insurance! We're glad that all are ok.

Michelle Obama Says We're Too Busy Being "Ballers", Calls on Blacks to Close Educational Gap

Bowie State University, a traditionally black college, invited First Lady Michelle Obama to speak at their Commencement on Friday, May 17th. During her speech First Lady Michelle expressed her concern over the strong educational gap that still exists with young Black Americans.

Young African Americans spend too much energy stunting for cameras and chasing dreams of being hip-hop stars. Mrs. Obama's point? The Black community needs to shift gears and put education as the top priority. Here's a snippet of her speech:

"...more than 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, more than 50 years after the end of “separate but equal,” when it comes to getting an education, too many of our young people just can’t be bothered.  Today, instead of walking miles every day to school, they’re sitting on couches for hours playing video games, watching TV.  Instead of dreaming of being a teacher or a lawyer or a business leader, they’re fantasizing about being a baller or a rapper. Right now, one in three African American students are dropping out of high school.  Only one in five African Americans between the ages of 25 and 29 has gotten a college degree -- one in five."

We couldn't agree more! As always, Mrs. Obama so eloquently and tactfully said what so many of us have been thinking for a long time.

What do you think of Mrs. Obama's words? Are Blacks responsible for the gross disparity in Educational achievement?

WOW! Bill Gates Offers $100,000 to Design a BETTER CONDOM

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has offered $100,000 to anyone that can redesign condoms so that they are less of a buzz kill. He is looking for a "Next Generation" condom that enhances or preserves the sensation to resemble that bare feeling a little more closely.

The grant for this challenge is funded by the Grand Challenges in Global Health program. The group has described this challenge by saying:
"The primary drawback from the male perspective is that condoms decrease pleasure as compared to no condom, creating a trade-off that many men find unacceptable, particularly given that the decisions about use must be made just prior to intercourse. Is it possible to develop a product without this stigma, or better, one that is felt to enhance pleasure?"

Interesting Challenge!

Do you think you can create a barely there condom? Any man that can create that should be a millionaire!

Teenagers Lock 89 Year Old In a Trunk for 2 DAYS!

Five teenagers have been arrested in the car theft and abduction of a Delaware woman.

89 year-old Margaret Smith was approached by two teenage girls who asked her for a ride home. When she agreed to do so, the girls directed her to a nearby house then they stole her keys and hijacked the car.

The two minors that robbed Margaret Smith

The teenagers forced Smith into the trunk and left her there for 2 days before dropping her off at a cemetery where she was found by police. Early on Wednesday morning police pulled the vehicle over and arrested all 5 teenagers inside.

Margaret's family already had a Missing Persons notice out for her, as she had been missing for over 24 hours. Although she was taken to the hospital, Margaret is fine and has gone home.

The 2 girls, both 17 years old, are being held for $122,000 in cash bonds. They are being charged with robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, and conspiracy.

Damn! People are crazy...they're even goin HAM on granny nowadays!!! It is so sad that they would take advantage of her kindness.

WTF: Officer Admits He Was Ordered to Target Young Black Men!

Wow! It can't get any more blatant than this.

A whistleblower living in the Bronx, NYC has finally revealed to the courts that he was directed by NYPD to specifically target young black men between the ages of 14 and 21.

In an audio that was secretly taped, Deputy Inspector Chris McCormack orders Officer Pedro Serrano to stop and frisk black men in this age group because they are supposedly "more prone to crime".

Inspector McCormack can clearly be heard telling Serrano over and over "I have no problem telling you this. Male blacks [...] 14 to 21" The stop and frisk law allows police officers to search anyone's outer garments if he/she appears suspicious.

Officer Pedro Serrano
So why is this important? Because the audio is being used in a class-action suit against NYPD. 4 young black men are in the process of suing the police department for being stopped and frisked unnecessarily due to racial profiling. They are hoping to establish stronger parameters against the Stop and Frisk law since it has been abused by so many people in law enforcement.

Officer Serrano, who testified in favor of the young men, has been ostracized by fellow officers and has received poor work evaluations since then. Black listing much?

We appreciate officer Serrano for taking a stand against discrimination! It is so sad that this is still a problem in 2013.

Do you think the "Stop and Frisk" law should stay?

REPORT: Childhood Obesity Declines Even Further

First Lady Michelle Obama made it very clear that her platform would be childhood obesity, an epidemic that was spreading in the US at alarming rates.

Statistics show that as of 2010, 15% of American children were obese and 2% were morbidly obese (Click Here to learn more about calculating a child's BMI). Although this was a major drop from earlier numbers, there was still a lot that needed to be done.

CNN reports that recent studies in the Washington, DC area show a slight decrease in the amount of obese children between ages 2 and 4 in low income households.

In recent years health officials have become much stricter about what's on the menu of public school lunches. Also, celebrities such as Beyonce and chef Jamie Oliver have helped to inform the public about their options to stay healthy.

"Food Revolution", a show where Jamie revamped the menu of public school lunches all over the US
However, the study does not pinpoint any particular cause for the decline. Regardless of how/why it happened, we're pleased to know that children are getting healthier!

We believe that Michelle Obama is the main reason for this success. There is NO other public figure that made this issue a major priority before!
