STYLE WATCH: African Inspired Fashion...ANKARA!

In the fashion world Ankara is HOT right now!

For those of you that aren't familiar with Ankara, it is a fabric with bright and bold colors that has creative and geometric patterns. Ankara is usually made of cotton or a similarly-textured blend and is dyed with wax.

Traditionally the fabric may have images that tell stories, but the fashion world is beginning to use Ankara-like fabrics that have equally bold colors and prints.

Gwen Stefani recently devoted her whole Spring/Summer 2011 collection to Ankara-Inspired fabrics:

Designers are creating contemporary styles while using a traditionally ethnic fabric. The contrast in styles makes for a funky, edgy, and urban look that is sure to get the attention of onlookers.

You will also see other celebrities rocking this look:

From blazers to bangles and headbands, Ankara can be seen in ALL elements of fashion right now. So try it out!!!

To get this look you can check out fashion lines like Boxing Kitten:

Honestly, you can go to a West African specialty store and you will see lots of fabric that you can use to make your own skirt/top/pants for a much cheaper price. Or if you don't know how to sew, you can have a tailor make them for you!

This look is so hot!!! Ankara is such a beautiful and vibrant fabric, we'll definitely try this for ourselves. Will you give it a try?
